The Bite-Sized Baker’s Adventures – Cannes, France

Cannes was by far my favorite city, which is saying A LOT when it was the trip of a lifetime! The moment you enter the city of Cannes you are greeted with brightly colored cafes, restaurants, bars, pâtisseries, boulangeries, and gelaterias. Every establishment offers outdoor seating in charming little patios that face the crystal clear seaside and it is absolutely breathe-taking!



As you walk further inland you have all of your major shopping. I’m not sure anyone who visits Cannes can resist shopping and I don’t even like shopping! You pass by little designer boutiques where chic French women shop in six-inch stilettos while walking big yellow labs. I was so surprised to see dogs allowed in all of the high-end stores—and not only dogs, but big, cute dogs too! Leave the teacup poodles in L.A.



After doing a little shopping damage of our own we went to a boulangerie to pick up a croissant, chocolate éclair, and a tart au frais to go with our espresso (go big or go home). We’re also trying to pretend like we’re really sophisticated and European by drinking straight espresso… It’s working.



We acted like really big tourists and rented a Vespa for the day and rode around Cannes and some of the neighboring coastal cities. Possibly the highlight of the trip… Ehh, but then there’s the food.. so maybe not.


After our little excursion we lunched at a traditional French café called Café Bohème. There were two things on the menu that I was not willing to go without—French Onion Soup and French Fries… Ummm, how good would French Onion Soup and French Fries be IN France? Exactly. We also ordered Bouillabaisse, Escalope Milanaise with Arugula, Roasted Tomatoes, and Shaved Parmesan, and Crème Brûlée.


Before the waiter brought us our soup they brought a plate of toasts, a mustard aioli, and shredded cheese (pictured above)… We were so confused by the pairings of food but just assumed it was some sort of French custom… It wasn’t. Thankfully Tony’s French speaking skills saved us and the waiter informed us that it was there to accompany the fish soup… A cheesy, mustard crouton, if you will. It was delicious. And the French Onion Soup?! Possibly the most decadent soup I’ve ever had and most likely the best I will ever have. Also, I do not get how people say American portions are huge… I did not finish one meal the entire trip in Europe! And I can and do eat a lot!

At the end of the day we stopped by at a fancy, little patisserie to pick up French macarons. We picked out Speculoos, Raspberry, Mango, Rose, Nutella, and Caramel. But I’m not going to lie… I think mine were better. Just saying.


Goodbye, Cannes! I hope to visit you one day again soon.

  1. OMG….Now I have another place to add to my must-visit list, Cannes! I agree with you, the portions we had in Paris and even in Italy were huge! I was expecting the much touted petite portions. After a while we figured out we really could not handle 3 course meals (since we couldn’t take home the leftovers!) and went back to our norm of sharing courses. The food is amazing in France!

  3. Remember the Tailhook scandal? Everyone who worked for the Navy had to have a one-day stand down training because of that – military and cinliiavs. My command rented a 5,000 capacity concert hall to have it and fed everyone lunch. Can you imagine how much that cost? And multiply that by thousands and thousands throughout the entire country.
