Garam Masala Spiced Nuts

I think Indian cuisine gets a bad reputation… At least in my circle of friends and family.

 

 

When I was growing up my dad would always make curry and our house would smell of curry and all of these foreign spices for the next few days. Everyone in my family hated the smell of curry and refused to try it and my dad’s attempts to share his worldly cuisine was lost upon us… Hamburger Helper for the win!

 

 

I think eventually my mom prohibited my dad from making curry in our household and my relationship with Indian cuisine remained nonexistent until my college years.

 

 

I don’t like picky eaters so I always like to try something once… Like chicken liver pâté, I tried that once and that is all I need! But due to my prior history with Indian food I wanted to start off slow… starting with a basic Indian spice, Garam Masala. It is a spice blend that adds sweet, spicy, and aromatic flavors to chicken, soup, stew, and vegetable dishes. I went to a local farmer’s market in Logan Square where I stumbled across Garam Masala Spiced Nuts from Mama’s Nuts.

 

 

The combination of flavors was unlike anything I’ve ever tried and all my fears surrounding Indian cuisine ceased to exist. Granted, these are just spiced nuts and not necessarily Indian cuisine, I think it is a great gateway to traditional Indian food. So live a little and try something new! I promise you it’s worth it, even if you just grow to like the Garam Masala spice.

Garam Masala Spiced Nuts

Yield: 10 servings

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pecans
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 2 teaspoons Garam Masala
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl, making sure the nuts are well-coated.
  2. Spread nuts in a single layer onto baking sheet and transfer to oven. Bake until golden and toasted, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely. Break nuts in pieces before serving.
